چکیده

Aluminum (Al) toxicity is a major factor limiting plant growth in acid soils. Elevated atmospheric CO2 [CO2] enhances plant growth. However, there is no report on the effect of elevated [CO2] on growth of plant genotypes differing in Al tolerance grown in acid soils. We investigated the effect of short-term elevated [CO2] on growth of Al-tolerant (ET8) and Al-sensitive (ES8) wheat plants and malate exudation from root apices by growing them in acid soils under ambient [CO2] and elevated [CO2] using open-top chambers. Exposure of ET8 plants to elevated [CO2] enhanced root biomass only. In contrast, shoot biomass of ES8 was enhanced by elevated [CO2]. Given that exudation of malate to detoxify apoplastic Al is a mechanism for Al tolerance in wheat plants, ET8 plants exuded greater amounts of malate from root apices than ES8 plants under both ambient and elevated [CO2]. These results indicate that elevated [CO2] has no effect on malate exudation in both ET8 and ES8 plants. These novel findings have important implications for our understanding how plants respond to elevated [CO2] grown in unfavorable edaphic conditions in general and in acid soils in particular.

Screening Egyptian Wheat Genotypes for Salt Tolerance at Early Growth Stages

Parameters that show a significant genotypic variation at early growth stages and are associated with salt tolerance at later stages may be used as rapid and economic screening criteria in breeding programs. The objective of this study was to test growth parameters at early growth stages for evaluating the salt tolerance of wheat genotypes. Ten wheat genotypes that differ from their salt tolera...

بررسی توزیع یونی در بافت های مختلف ارقام متحمل و حساس به شوری گندم (.Triticum aestivum L)

An understanding of physiological mechanisms of salt tolerance is necessary for breeding programs, in order to select the desired trait in different wheat genotypes. Three bread wheat genotype differing in salt tolerance were employed to assess ion distribution and growth responses under saline conditions. To evaluate ion distribution in plant, sodium and potassium concentrations as well as K+/...

Assessment of agro-physiological traits for salt tolerance in drought-tolerant wheat genotypes

Salt stress is one of the major constraints for wheat cultivation inIranand leads to a considerable loss in crop yield each year. In high salinity soils, the reduced osmotic potential of soil solutes may cause physiological drought. In this study the salt tolerance of different drought-tolerant bread wheat genotypes were studied by examining various agronomic and physiological traits, inclu...

Determination of Aluminum Stress Tolerance Threshold During Seed Germination of Wheat

Environmental stresses are the most important factors that reduce plant growth in stages of development. The presence of aluminum in acidic soils as an environmental stress has an impact on different parts of the plant and reduces root growth, water absorption and nutrients and increases susceptibility to drought.  In order to evaluate the effect of aluminum stress levels on wheat at germinatio...

Differential Physiological Responses of Portuguese Bread Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) Genotypes under Aluminium Stress

The major limitation of cereal production in acidic soils is aluminium (Al) phytotoxicity which inhibits root growth. Recent evidence indicates that different genotypes within the same species have evolved different mechanisms to cope with this stress. With these facts in mind, root responses of two highly Al tolerant Portuguese bread wheat genotypes—Barbela 7/72/92 and Viloso mole—were investi...
